So pleased was JWD Enterprises with the carrying capacity and fuel-efficiency of its first 7.5-tonne FUSO Canter that it has now ordered a second, identical vehicle, which arrives in September.

The family-owned and managed company is based in Eastbourne, East Sussex, and specialises in nationwide domestic and commercial removals, as well as offering general haulage and storage services.

The next Canter 7C18 will be supplied, like its predecessor, by Mercedes-Benz Dealer Rossetts Commercials – the manufacturer’s franchised Network also sells and supports the popular FUSO light truck range in Britain.

The 7.5-tonne Canter offers a market-leading body and payload allowance of around 4.0 tonnes, which is approximately a tonne more than a conventional truck with the same gross weight.

After deductions for the Transport Enterprises box body, air management kit and 1,000 kg Dhollandia column tail-lift, this translates for JWD Enterprises into an impressive carrying capacity of 3,220 kg.

The Canter is also highly manoeuvrable, thanks to its compact footprint and the tight turning circle achieved as a result of its cab-over-engine design.

JWD Enterprises was founded some 40 years ago by John Dobbs, who remains active in the business. He was joined in 2013 by his son David, whose successful logistics industry career included a stint with Pallet Track.

Their company runs 13 trucks, among them a pair of new 12-tonne Mercedes-Benz Atego 1224s. The entire fleet is maintained by the workshop team at Rossetts Commercials’ Eastbourne branch.

Thanks to its package of ECOFFICIENCY measures, the latest Canter range offers fuel savings of up to 9% compared with the previous version. JWD’s vehicle is powered by a 3.0-litre common-rail diesel engine with range-topping 129 kW (175 hp) output, which drives through a smooth-shifting, fully automated DUONIC® dual clutch transmission.

The truck has already won praise for its economy, particularly while on assignments to Paris and Dusseldorf for Clockwork Exhibitions, of Hailsham. “We used 140 litres of fuel on the 700-mile round trip to Germany, which equated to a return of nearly 23 mpg,” said David Dobbs. “That’s a figure we’re very happy with.”

He admitted: “My father and I were a little concerned when we first saw the Canter, as the cab looked so small against the high-volume body. We needn’t have worried, though. Several members of the team have taken the vehicle out and everyone’s really chuffed with it because it’s so comfortable and easy to drive.”

A member of the Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce for the last two decades, JWD Enterprises secured accreditation from the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) last year.

Its Canter is the subject of a Mercedes-Benz Financial Services contract hire agreement which was arranged by Rossetts Commercials’ Ian Carlisle, recent winner of a Gold Award from the manufacturer for his outstanding performance in 2016.

Mr Dodds added: “We receive terrific support from the Rossetts team. If ever I have an issue with one of our older lorries I know I can call on Service Manager Malcolm Rosier and his colleagues, and if necessary they’ll carry out a repair overnight to help us out.”
